Vampire Weekend album review:

Sounds like reggae-lite. Like someone who listened to too much Paul Simon’s Rhythm of the Saints and did a Bob Marley impression while sticking to their British rock roots. I mean its good, just odd.
I like A-Punk because its the little pop song that could. I am smitten with Campus because I love the line

“In the afternoon
You’re out on the stone and grass
And I’m sleeping on the balcony
After class”

But when he says it, it sounds like summer.

I saw The Fall. Good movie. If anyone tells you the movie sucks, tell them they are (mostly) wrong. Here’s why.

Yes, the acting and writing needed a little upgrade. I agree that perhaps it needed a little push up in quality. It’s not bad. Just not fantastic.

Tarsem’s imagery is amazing and he really has a great eye for film and directing. He has such potential to do a really amazing film and create a masterpiece. Since your eyes are so happily entertained, you really need some good stuff for your ears and and brain. But I think the beauty of the images can stand alone, and the writing/acting does not get in the way.

So, I say go see the movie. It’s worth $10-$12. I look forward to seeing more from Tarsem.

PS. Im kinda fastinated by Lee Pace. Don’t really know why yet.

PPS. Beethoven’s 7th. Really great job with this piece of music. He really needs to do a few more music videos.

2. a-ha got their name because it means the same thing in multiple languages.
3. Duran Duran took their name from the villain in the movie Barbarella – Dr. Durand-Durand.
4. R.E.M. was named when Michael Stipe opened the dictionary and randomly pointed to a word.
5. The Pogues were originally called Pogue Mahone, which is Gaelic for “kiss my arse.” It was shortened later.
6. The Bay City Rollers, are, as you might suspect, named after Bay City, Michigan. But none of the band members are actually from Bay City (They’re Scottish); the city was just plucked from the map.

Rufus Wainwright - “Matinee Idol”

May 19th marks the 10th anniversary of Rufus Wainwright’s self titled debut.

Love him or hate him, he released one of the most original debut cds both in style and lyrics. While it might not have been a commercial success, he garnered critical acclaim for his operatic pop and piano overtures. His songs are as large as his personality, and he’s currently planning to write an opera.

A stand out song from the release is “Matinee Idol”, a song written about River Phoenix. Chamber pop is an unusual term, but it fits him well.
